Remember do not copy DVDs that you do not own! It is illegal to make a copy of a movie for use on your device if you do not own the original.
The legality of DVD ripping will vary based on your country of residence. Accelerate Software does not in any way endorse violation of the valid rights of copyright holders, and strongly recommends that you consult your country's copyright and fair use laws before copying any video content.
i'll admit that i don't really go to a lot of conferences. Excuse me, it used to be that i didn't go to a lot of conferences. Lately, however, that's kinda changed. Right now (and a fair bit of tomorrow) i'm sitting in the Fairmont San Jose being a nice little table monkey for a local conference. i don't mind it. It gives me a chance to do some work while listening to an inordinately upbeat muzak version of John Lennon's Imagine, plus i get to talk to folks.
The thing that i find generally odd is the fact that, were i an attendee i'd have to pony up $1400-1700 to attend this three day event and seminar. Granted, i'm paying to hear some wizened scholars of web development, but i also get a bunch of "extras" including:
Half Day Workshop
code examples
meals
hang out with speakers
a 30GB iPod Video or nintendo Wii
Hang on a minute.
Ok, so the other things are nice bonuses, i mean, adding in breakfast, lunch and dinner is kinda nice since finding food around most conferences can be a pricey hassle. Hanging out with the speakers sounds nice, but i'm willing to bet that we won't be sitting around shooting pool or anything, and... ok, maybe the code sample thing, but c'mon, this is web programming. If you don't the code, it's probably on sourceforge anyway.
No, what i find kinda galling is the fact that they're handing out iPods and Wiis. Seriously. i mean, why not just shave $300 off the price of the event? Do "web professionals" really need those things? They probably already have them by now if they really wanted them, anyway. (Alright, maybe not the Wii since that's still not the easiest thing to get, but c'mon.)
And no, i'm not just saying that because as a vendor sitting at the sponsor table, i didn't get one.
Ok, maybe a little.
