Apple iPod 30GB Review

The fifth generation of Apple's iPod is also the most stylish. It's thinner than ever and, of course, it can play video. So if it's ultimate style you're after, look no further. However, we think PC owners want a little more from their MP3 player and, in terms of raw functionality at least, the 5G iPod isn't all-conquering. You might find it a little simplistic, especially if you have multiple PCs.

iTunes 'marries' your iPod to a single machine to limit music copying. However, there's a way round this by managing your music using Winamp and the iPod for Winamp plugin; your player will appear in Winamp's music library. However, the main problem the iPod faces is in Apple's bloody-minded approach to simplicity.

It wants the iPod to remain a simple device, with easy-to-use clickwheel and limited controls. The trouble is, with iPods becoming ever more complex devices, this could easily become a restriction. As it is, Apple gets away with it. Is this a backlash? No, of course not. It just means that Apple has to make life a little easier if it wants to stay on top of the game.

As well as this 30GB version, a 60GB edition is available for ¡ê299. The body is a little thicker, but it's a small price to pay for the extra headroom. We've now tested two of these 30GB models and battery life is poor at five hours with a bit of video playback. You'll be able to squeeze more out just by playing music alone, but it's nowhere near the 14-hour claim.

AdvertisementHowever, where Apple really loses out is in terms of file formats. It doesn't like WMA (obviously), but doesn't mind MP3 or WAV. Of course, it prefers AAC and Protected AAC (the latter via the iTunes Music Store). In video, too, you're limited to .m4v, .mp4 and .mov.

For PC owners, this isn't really good enough out of the box and while excellent conversion apps are easily downloaded, if it's video you want, look elsewhere.
